There is a vast difference between last session's bid for a referendum and the current one. The current referendum is in motion, whereas the last one never even got off the ground. Everyone knew it wouldn't happen, because the unionist parties made sure of it. There was no referendum to pull out of, it was never anything more than distant dream for nationalists.

Now, however, everyone knows that there will be a referendum in Autumn 2014. That can only be stopped by the SNP now, so if it doesn't happen, that's the SNP's credibility shot to pieces. A glorious failure would be preferable to that scenario. The momentum has started, so the referendum juggernaut will arrive. Cancelling the referendum would result in the same short-term result as a "no" in the referendum - Scotland remaining in the union and independence put off for a generation - but would damage the long-term prospects. At least a lost referendum would show how far independence still has to travel to gain enough support, and indeed, a close result could even keep independence on the agenda.

Quite simply, you and Ian are fooling yourselves if you think there will not be a referendum in 2014. Time to stop being ostriches.Doug Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15017218581660887134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-23339648103500066772012-04-25T10:14:50.729-07:002012-04-25T10:14:50.729-07:00"And don't say it was the SNP's lack ..."And don't say it was the SNP's lack of majority that was the problem"

It was the SNP's lack of majority that was the problem.RevStuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03915111503712807257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-24505341080059664742012-04-20T19:44:07.048-07:002012-04-20T19:44:07.048-07:00Doug Delusional said:

And of course that won't exactly do him any favours, but compared to the bloodbath of a lost referendum it would be chickenfeed.

After all, he's delayed it once already because he knew it was unwinnable, and that's hardly ever mentioned now. And don't say it was the SNP's lack of majority that was the problem, because events since the majority was achieved demonstrate that the referendum Bill last time round was mere posturing.

He would find an excuse, and hope that he would get a chance with another SNP majority. It would all be part of the gradualist strategy. Yet another delay, obviously, but it's been 300 years...Stuart Wintonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02772436419630464325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-13264011757554034692012-04-18T11:06:50.360-07:002012-04-18T11:06:50.360-07:00Dear Mr. Smart

Second SNP term and nothing about local government reform, the task of the second term.

Yes, the SNP love playing celebrity politics, who doesn't like going to the party, when it comes to clean up, it is another story.

Salmond's 'clique' turn out at elections, post election, they will be MIA during the normal political year in branches doing activism.

And independence can only be won on the ground door to door.

Having done 17 campaigns in 3 years I know the SNP on the ground, who works and who doesn't in Glasgow.

Independence should be taken offline until 2018.

Scotland is unprepared for independence as of this date.

Yousr sincerely

George Laird
The Campaign for Human Rights at Glasgow UniversityG Lairdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07634338820731652821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-48843774916435656962012-04-18T08:17:10.686-07:002012-04-18T08:17:10.686-07:00Laugh i nearly paid the BBC licence fee!!Laugh i nearly paid the BBC licence fee!!Key bored warrior.https://www.blogger.com/profile/05192681529004653727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-61942293414724364872012-04-18T03:51:17.944-07:002012-04-18T03:51:17.944-07:00So not quite "my last blog about Scottish pol...So not quite "my last blog about Scottish politics until May 4th", then?RevStuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03915111503712807257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586389062182728098.post-49404809157993095902012-04-17T16:52:42.493-07:002012-04-17T16:52:42.493-07:00I'm enjoying this. It's not as good as your restaurant review or your travel writings or your tribute to Janey Buchan, but it has a certain je ne sais quoi about it.

To recapitulate, once upon a time there wasn't going to be a referendum for various reasons. Then, not all that long ago, you predicted that Yes would get 28% so plainly there was going to be.

But that was then. Now we are back to there won't be a referendum. I think you'll find that to go back on holding a referendum now would be far, far more damaging to the SNP than a "no" vote would be.

It'll be fun to quote this back at you when the referendum gets officially announced...Doug Danielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15017218581660887134noreply@blogger.com
